What does this mean?

As of February 1st 2026, it will be illegal to buy an electric bike that does not meet this certification in NSW.

We’re proud to be the first and only fat tyre bikes in Australia to meet this standard.

Our bikes have passed the highest levels of safety testing under UL 2271 & UL 2849. These tests have been approved by the NSW Government, deeming our bikes as compliant EPACS (Electrically Power Assisted Cycles).

NSW EPAC Certification

Compliance Public Statement.

Our bikes have been certified by the NSW government as UL 2271 & UL 2849 compliant.

UL 2271 – Battery Safety

This certification ensures the e-bike’s battery pack meets the highest international standards for safety. It covers things like thermal protection, electrical safety, and resistance to vibration, shock, and environmental stress, so you can trust your battery won’t let you down.

UL 2849 – Complete e-Bike System Safety

This certification covers the entire electrical drive system, motor, charger, controller, and wiring. It ensures they work together safely, reducing risks of fire, electric shock, and mechanical failure.

All Fatboy Bikes models are designed to comply with NSW Electrically Power-Assisted Cycles (EPAC) legislation at point of sale and can be restricted further to meet other state legislation.

Key compliance points:

• Maximum continuous rated motor power: 500 watts
• Maximum load capacity: 180 kg
• Speed: 25km/h or less for public use.
• Progressive power control: The motor assistance reduces as the bicycle’s speed increases and cuts out at 25 km/h or when the rider stops pedalling above 6 km/h, in line with EPAC requirements.
• Throttle usage: Throttles are intended for use on private property only and MUST be isolated when riding on public roads. If intended use is solely for public roads, we recommend swapping the throttle for the full length grip provided with every bike.
• Where required, the continuous rated power of the EPAC can be further restricted by limiting the bike’s maximum speed. For states outside of NSW, where the continuous rated power is capped at 250W, we recommend reducing the maximum speed to 20 km/h.

In the opinion of Fatboy Bikes, all Fatboy Bikes models are compliant with EPAC legislation when sold and are safe for public use.

Before using this EPAC, check the applicable local laws relating to your intended use of the EPAC and ensure appropriate settings are used.
